Another way of keeping score

St Helens v Wigan

St Helens and Wigan have met 367 times in completed first-team matches since the Northern Union’s first season, 1895/96. This page sets out the all-time head-to-head record, first across every competition, then for regular league matches only and for Good Friday, the derby’s traditional date, and shows how the balance of power has shifted decade by decade.

Figures are complete to the most recent derby: Wigan 38–16 St Helens at the Brick Community Stadium on 24 July 2026.

In regular league matches Wigan lead 159 to 104, with 12 draws, from 275 meetings. Points: St Helens 3,709, Wigan 4,666. The Super League regular season is far closer: Wigan have won 42 of the 86 meetings since 1996, St Helens 40, with 4 draws.

This count includes every regular-season league derby, including the War Emergency Leagues of 1939–45, the Lancashire Senior Competition of 1896–1902 (the league the Lancashire clubs played in at the time), and Super League Magic Weekend fixtures, which are regular-season rounds. It leaves out play-offs and finals (the 1960 Championship play-off, the 1971 Championship final and 13 Super League play-offs and Grand Finals) and two South West Lancashire county fixtures from 1900 and 1903. The clubs have never met in a second-tier league.

Wins by decade

Wigan dominated the first half of the 20th century: St Helens won only 3 of the 35 derbies played in the 1910s and 1920s. St Helens had the better of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Wigan took back control in the 1980s and above all the 1990s, winning 30 of 40. Since 2000 the derby has been close to even.

About these figures

Results, dates and venues come from Rugby League Project, and the totals match its own summary pages, points included. Rugby League Project lists the first meeting as a Northern Union match at Knowsley Road on 16 November 1895, a 0–0 draw. Two matches abandoned on Boxing Day (1944 and 1968) are not counted. The Wikipedia rivalry page gives a slightly different total because it also counts friendlies and dates from May 2026. Good Friday dates are worked out from each year’s Easter. Clubs are listed alphabetically throughout.
